Family Portrait in Zilker Botanical Gardens
I was recently asked to help with a family portrait in Zilker Botanical Gardens in Austin. I was a anxious as there were 11 members of the family and 4 of those were kids under the age of 5. Fortunately I had my wife Samantha available to entertain kids and goof around behind the camera to get them to smile. But it worked out. In Photoshop, I had to replace only 5 heads in the group with other shots. I was really happy with the background textures in the Botanical Gardens!
This is what the client wrote on Google reviews:
I was looking for a photographer for a family photo and found Johnny online. I didn’t think that most of the other sites with wedding photos would be really relevant to what I was looking for. I liked Johnny’s portfolio of family pictures. I also figured that since he had heavy commercial experience, he would be a pro. I figured correctly. He did a great job on an extended family of 11 in an outdoor setting. He was also great to work with, very easy-going and flexible. His wife also helped out at the shoot, coaxing cooperation from 4 grandkids under 5. I thought I might have to resort to serious bribery but didn’t have to. Finally, his prices were very reasonable. I really appreciate his efforts and the results and would highly recommend him to anyone.
Family Portrait for Daniel Family
I was just honored to shoot a Family Portrait for Daniel Family.
One of the young boys was adamant about not having his picture taken so I reached into my bag of tricks and asked him if he could help me with the Vision 4 lights. I hoisted him onto my knee so he could reach the shutter release on the camera and fire so he could admire the strobes firing when he pulled the trigger. That is all to took. He now had ownership and he smiled like a saint.

Here is a review from Christian who needed some new professional as well as social media head shots. We went to Zilker Park for a round of images as well as the more formal backdrop with two lights and a bounce card.
Johnny was very friendly and flexible throughout the process and let us choose our locations where we wanted our photos taken. We took professional head shots with his setup and some casual shots outside. His equipment is top notch, and he produces the highest quality of photos. I’m very satisfied with the results!
Christmas Family Portrait
I had these friends call me just before Christmas day asking if I could find a place to shoot a family portrait they needed to deliver as a gift on Christmas Day. My fireplace worked just fine. Three speedlights did the job. I gelled the speedlights with 1/2 CTO which is a light orange filter. There is a beauty dish on the left, back light above Erika, and a kicker just to the right of Evan. Cue the guitar for filling an empty space. I tried shooting with the fireplace on but they started melting so I added the fire in Photoshop.

I just love the sassiness of the boy with his arms crossed.
I do some pro bono work for charities around town. One of my favorite is Wonders and Worries. This organization provides individual and group support services for children ages 2-18 whose mom or dad are fighting a life threatening illness. These are a couple of family portraits I just shot to feature at the Wonders and Worries Que Maravilla fundraiser this year.

Portraits
Family Portraits portrait photography and individual head shots are an area of photography that requires lighting expertise, patience, and a calm disposition that makes everyone feel comfortable, whether it be a high school senior, a bride to be, or a family of 16. From the photographer:
Shooting headshots or portraits is one of the most demanding photographic disciplines because it requires the photographer to exercise exquisite people skills while staying acutely aware of how his or her camera and lighting equipment is performing. It is not uncommon that the subject you are photographing is nervous, maybe short on time or maybe just does not want to be in front of the camera. Naturally, the photographer picks up on this energy and of course it boosts anxiety, but he has the responsibility of creating a sense of calm – a pleasant environment for the subject. He may be sweating bullets trying to exude calm while doing triage on his or her gear because suddenly your wireless trigger decides to stop working, but he has to smile and breathe deeply so that the subject is able to smile and breathe deeply. This whole concept of working with the subject while working with photography gear sounds simple enough, but once you get into this profession, you begin to understand the value of effective people skills while knowing your gear inside and out. Something I always to do help calm the subject is to reach out and fix a collar or tug on a blouse to relieve a wrinkle, or move a tusk of hair. This whole act of touching is very powerful. The subject is totally unaware that is creating bond of trust with the photographer. Just don’t overdo it!
